Anoushka Shankar & Karsh Kale review / NY Times

Hugh Masekela

Smoke machine, strobe lights and ... sitar? That was the combination at the Highline Ballroom on Wednesday night. Anoushka Shankar, Ravi Shankar’s daughter and musical disciple, and Karsh Kale, a tabla drummer who is also an electronica producer and programmer, have collaborated on an album, “Breathing Underwater” (Manhattan), and their band headlined a triple bill of world-music fusions to commemorate the 15th anniversary of Global Rhythm magazine. The transcontinental bill also included the South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela and the Guadeloupean New York saxophonist Jacques Schwarz-Bart. (continue at nytimes.com)

The Aliens / Pitchfork...

The Aliens Invade North America This Fall

Cool it, Lou Dobbs, they're just going on tour
The Aliens-- whom we should really start referring to as The Gamma Band-- seem rather fond of letting North America lag a little behind their home planet of, uh, Scotland. Having allowed Astronomy for Dogs room to invade the UK months before it captured the U.S., they're now following a run of UK dates with a couple weeks in the U.S. and Canada. Where will their interplanetary invasion take them next? By the looks of it, perhaps the barbershop. (continue at pitchforkmedia.com)

Michael Gira / Pitchfork

Angels of Light Prep We Are Him LP

Former Swans main man Michael Gira will return with the fifth full-length with his Angels of Light project on August 21. The record, titled We Are Him and set for release on Gira's own Young God Records, is the follow-up to 2005's Sing "Other People"; it also features quite a host of guest musicians.

Previous Gira collaborators Akron/Family served as a backing band to lay down basic tracks for the album, and other contributors include Christoph Hahn (Swans), Bill Rieflin (Swans, Ministry, R.E.M.), Julia Kent (Antony and the Johnsons), Eszter Balint (Stranger Than Paradise), Steve Moses (Lambic), new Young God signee Larkin Grimm, and "Spinning on Air" host David Garland.

To celebrate the album's release, Gira will play a solo show at NYC's Highline Ballroom on September 14. Marissa Nadler and Castanets round out the ace bill.

NY Times previews this week...

DIAMANDA GALÁS (Sunday) Though she is invariably dressed in black, with her face in witchy streaks of makeup, Ms. Galás needs only her voice to terrify and seduce. She slides from a low, sensual growl to painful yet musically precise shrieks, and has a vast repertory; for this show, “Imitation of Life,” she interprets love songs by Earl Grant, Juliette Greco and Jacques Brel.

JUNIOR SENIOR (Monday) This Danish duo’s “Move Your Feet” was the hipster hit of 2003, a winking electro-pop take on Jackson 5-era bubblegum that was catchy and joyous enough to avoid being swallowed up by its own irony. Jesper Mortensen (“Junior”) and Jeppe Laursen (“Senior”) play the Highline Ballroom in celebration of the United States release of their second album, “Hey Hey My My Yo Yo” (Ryko), which begins: “Hello! Welcome to our new record. This is it! We’re back!”

Recognized as the "Sexiest Female Vocalist Alive" by Esquire, BETTYE is sure to deliver a rousing set of songs filled with majesty, richness and strength packed with more than enough raw visceral emotion to raise the hair on the back of the neck of any fully alive, blood pumping, breathing human being.

Diamanda Galás on WNYC

Singer-pianist Diamanda Galás talks about two upcoming programs of songs at the Highline Ballroom: "Imitation of Life" (on August 12) and "Chansons Malheureuses and Amanedhes" (on August 19).

Salt & Samovar / Village Voice

Feature in this week's Village Voice:

You have to wonder what "Old Eden" looks like when you hear the Salt & Samovar tune's floppy Farfisa organ (à la the B-52s) as gospel-revival claps and tambourines raise the tent. This Eden must resemble America—the woods at least, or at least the woods of all those "manifest destiny" myths. The band itself lives in Brooklyn, however, albeit a bucolic Brooklyn, if only in their minds.

SLAVIC SOUL PARTY (Thursday) This nine-piece Brooklyn band is dedicated to the Balkan brass style, and its members have traveled through Macedonia and Serbia, picking up tunes. But Slavic Soul Party’s raucous concerts are anything but scholarly, mixing the Balkan sound with funk and jazz. With Mucca Pazza and the Main Squeeze Orchestra. At 8 p.m., Highline Ballroom,

ANDREW W. K. (Tomorrow) Somewhere between noise-punk bubblegum and motivational oratory gone awry, Andrew W. K.’s absurdly high-energy party metal (“Party Til You Puke”) comes across as either self-aware performance art or simply the most lunkheaded anthems to debauchery ever recorded. Celebrating the long-delayed American release of his latest album, “Close Calls With Brick Walls” (Load), he plays solo tomorrow at the Highline Ballroom

Black Dice / New Album / Pitchfork

Info on their new album on pitchforkmedia.com:

We took a chance on an email chat with Black Dice's Eric Copeland (not to be confused with this guy), and the odds worked out in our favor. Not only did we learn a bunch of details about the forthcoming Black Dice LP, but we also got the scoop on Copeland's first solo offering, Hermaphrodite, out August 14 on Paw Tracks.

First, Black Dice. The new LP, which follows up 2005's Broken Ear Record, arrives October 23, bearing the tasteful title Load Blown. It's technically a collection of 12"s with bonus cuts, and this one, as previously mentioned, comes courtesy of Paw Tracks rather than Black Dice's longtime home DFA. So why the switch?

"Our contract ended with DFA," explained Copeland, "and by that time a lot had changed for both them and us where the match wasn't quite as right as five years ago. So we parted amicably. Paw Tracks asked us and it has been a really easy experience, zero bullshit."
