North Miss Allstars / NY Times review
pics are up in the photo gallery.
The North Mississippi Allstars don’t believe in squandering words. Within the first five songs at the Highline Ballroom on Tuesday night, the band’s lead singer and guitarist, Luther Dickinson, managed to wring several different connotations out of the verb “shake.” It first appeared as a frisky command. (“Shake what your mama gave you.”) Then it propelled a carnal boast. (“We gonna shake ’em on down.”) Its next usage was more descriptive: “She’s shakin’ like a leaf/Tremblin’ on a tree.” (continue at nytimes.com)

Klosterman weighs in on the Super Bowl...
If the Patriots win, they will just become this thing that scorched the earth for five months before capturing a trophy that was never in doubt. Future historians will describe this New England team as if it were a machine. Everyone will concede the Pats' superlative greatness, but the 19 wins will be just a collection of numbers. But if they lose -- especially if they lose late -- the New England Patriots will be the most memorable collection of individuals in the history of pro football. They will prove that nothing in this world is guaranteed, that past returns do not guarantee future results, that failure is what ultimately defines us and that Gisele will probably date a bunch of other dudes in her life, because man is eternally fallible. Hip Hop Karaoke in NY Times
worth reading for this comment post at the bottom alone:
"big pun used punch ins, so mr. gatchalian is reaching for a form that did not exist. but in so doing, he is creating a new form. that is the potential for this.

All Points West
The first annual ALL POINTS WEST MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL is set for August 8-10th, 2008. The three-day, multi-stage music and arts festival will take place at Liberty State Park in New Jersey–a historic location offering panoramic views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the Manhattan skyline. The festival’s name is inspired by the area’s rich history, particularly Ellis Island and the NJ Central Railroad terminal located on the festival site, where many arriving immigrants boarded trains for ALL POINTS WEST.
Additional details regarding the line-up, ticketing and other information for ALL POINTS WEST will be announced in the coming weeks. A portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit “Friends of Liberty State Park.”
ALL POINTS WEST is produced by Goldenvoice/AEG Live and Liberty Events in association with the HighLine Ballroom.

Jose Gonzalez / Pitchfork
José González sees trouble down the line, and-- like a singin' Swedish Al Gore-- he intends to do something about it. He's partnered up with sustainable energy boosters Reverb for a month-long "Green Tour" of North America that kicks off in Florida on leap day.
Reverb will assist González in calculating and then canceling out the carbon emissions his tour produces, provide his crew with biodegradable catering supplies and reusable water bottles, and occasionally reenact their favorite scenes from "Captain Planet".
All of these efforts will help make Mr. González's tour carbon-neutral. Hey! That's today's A.Word.A.Day! (continue at pitchforkmedia.com)
